President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday said that DU represents India in all its richness as well as diversity, putting in that there was a bit of the institution in every area of greatness in the country and foreign.

Speaking at the university’s 99th convocation, Murmu said, “The Delhi University community should sense duty-bound to guide other universities in the country on parameters of greatness, and thereby, earn a position among globally comparative institutions of higher education,” she added.

The president said that we should admire and welcome all languages as well as cultures, but always stay affiliated with our origins. Regeneration and creativity come from the cores. As DU represents India.

She encouraged the youth to obey Gandhiji’s advice of obtaining the excellent knowledge obtainable in the world while staying attached to Indian soil. The president addressed how she was the first girl from her small village to go to town to study.

Murmu added that among their classmates too, there may be numerous such students from whose households or villages no one would have been competent to get university-level education before them. Such students are very proficient and hardworking. They come to the University with great confidence to accomplish their ambitions. Occasionally they become targets of an ‘inferiority complex’. This should not take place in any diplomatic society. Teachers as well as other students must motivate such first-generation university students.

The president said that the priority should be on meeting the demands of students such as neat toilets for girl students, world-class labs, real qualifications, and the needs of persons with disabilities.

Murmu said that due to the consumerist concept of development and civilization, the challenges of pollution, climate shift, and lifestyle disorders are taking a more problematic form. Our past generations have done numerous good things but they also made some errors. She advised the young generation to carry forward the good things and do away with their missteps.

The president said that the main purpose of education is to make a useful human being. It is fair to get great in life but it is better to be a good human. Finding life on Mars is a good thing, but exploring for well-being in life with good thoughts is even more crucial. She instructed the students to desire a new and aim big to construct a new India and a new world.
