Overview of UPSC Civil Services Exam 2023 Results

On April 16, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced the results of the Civil Services Exam 2023. Aditya Srivastava emerged as the top-ranked candidate. Srivastava, who pursued electrical engineering as his optional subject, successfully cleared the exam. He holds a bachelor’s degree (B.Tech.) in electrical engineering from IIT Kanpur.

Animesh Pradhan, a Computer Science graduate (B.Tech.) from NIT Rourkela, attained the second position. He opted for sociology as his optional subject. Donuru Ananya Reddy graduated with a B.A. (Hons.) in geography from Miranda House, Delhi University. She secured the third rank, choosing anthropology as her optional subject.

P.K. Sidharth Ramkumar, who graduated with a B.Arch from the College of Architecture, Trivandrum, achieved the fourth rank. He selected anthropology as his optional subject. Ruhani, a graduate of B.A. (Hons.) in Economics from St. Stephens College, Delhi University, secured the fifth position. She is opting for economics as her optional subject.

Demographic Breakdown of Successful Candidates

According to the UPSC, a total of 1,016 candidates have successfully passed the examination. Subsequently, they have been recommended for various central government services. Among the 1,000-plus candidates, 115 come from the economically weaker section. 303, 165, and 86 belong to the OBC, SC, and ST categories, respectively. The remaining 347 candidates belong to the general category.

Recommended Appointments and Services

The successful candidates have been recommended for appointment to prestigious services. They include the Indian Administrative Service, the Indian Foreign Service, and the Indian Police Service. Additionally, they are slated for various Central Services positions, encompassing both Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’ categories.

Profiles of Top-Ranked Candidates

The top 25 successful candidates boast diverse educational backgrounds. These range from engineering, humanities, science, commerce, business administration, architecture, and law. They have obtained degrees from renowned institutions such as IITs, IIMs, NITs, the University of Delhi, and the National Law University.

Optional Subject Choices

According to the UPSC, the candidates have chosen a diverse array of subjects for their optional choices in the written (main) examination. These subjects include anthropology, chemistry, geography, economics, electrical engineering, law, history, mathematics, physics, political science, international relations, and sociology.

Overview of Examinations

Furthermore, among the recommended candidates, 30 individuals with benchmark disabilities are included. They comprise 16 orthopedically handicapped, six visually challenged, five hearing impaired, and three with multiple disabilities.

The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2023 occurred on May 28 last year. A total of 10,16,850 candidates applied, out of which 5,92,141 appeared for the exam. Out of these, 14,624 candidates qualified for the written (main) examination held in September 2023. The UPSC announced that 2,855 candidates qualified for the personality test.

Vacancies and Reserved List

The government has announced its intention to fill a total of 1,143 vacancies through the Civil Services Examination in 2023. These vacancies encompass positions in various prestigious roles, including 180 in IAS, 37 in IPS, 200 in IPS, 613 in various central Group A services, and 113 in Group B services. Furthermore, the UPSC has compiled a reserved list, consisting of 240 candidates. Additionally, the UPSC has stated that the candidature of 355 recommended candidates is provisional.
