In a hearing conducted on Tuesday 28 July, Delhi HC declined to concede to any petitions or requests striving for issuance of directions to center or DU to introduce new courses and programs in the area of dance.

The division bench of Justice Prateek Jalan and Chief Justice D N Patel said the court will not issue any directives implying what all courses University should offer. The court further included that decisions regarding what all courses should be offered, their syllabus, and various other aspects should be taken by the qualifies professionals and authorities of college and not by any courts.

The HC further advised the petitioners to approach the particular institutions which offer dance courses to look into the matter. The court further questioned petitioners that why do they want everything near them with no efforts. Why can’t you approach other places and institutions where such courses are already there. The petitioners were then advised by the court to withdraw their petition or it would lead them to financial costs. The petitioner, therefore, withdrew their petition by following the court’s advice.

ECA IS BACK: DU ADMISSION VIA ECA EXPLAINED

The plea was filed by the petitioners to compel Delhi University to introduce dance courses. They argued that the university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in music while there are no such courses for dance. The petitioners objected to the courses offered by DU and inferred it as discrimination. They called it discrimination as the university offers varied courses in music but not in the stream of dance.

The University of Delhi however considers dance as a part of extracurricular activities. The Delhi University thus offers admission to students through ECA quota where dance is considered as an extracurricular. The University has categorized 14 activities under ECA which include dance, music, creative writing, debate, fine arts, digital media, NCC, NSS, theater, Divinity, quiz, etc. The application process for DU admissions 2020 under the following ECA categories begins from 1st August.
