While the admissions to the University of Delhi are undergoing, new DU students are worried about their accommodations. Thus, it is a challenge for them to find a place in college hostels. Also, it is financially straining as some colleges are considering converting all rooms into single occupancy adhering to covid-19 protocols.

The varsity is yet to give clarity on how the classes of the new DU students, i.e. the 1st years will undergo. But, for now, in-person classes are only being conducted for only final year students, that too practical classes.

Limited hostel facilities pose to be a threat for new DU students:

As per data, only 20 DU colleges offer accommodation facilities. Thus, 12 are for females, 6 for both, and 2 for males. Also, the varsity has a separate hostel for UG students on the north campus. As for 2019 (before the pandemic), a total of 3,752 hostel seats were available compared to the 146,955 outstation students. Hence, finding hostels is definitely a challenge for new DU students.

Also, following the covid-19 security measures, several DU colleges with hostels are planning to convert all rooms into single occupancy ones. Hence, deliberations will be made to reduce hostel capacity in colleges including Hansraj, Kirorimal College, Indraprastha College, LSR, Miranda House, etc.

DU SECOND CUT-OFF LIST: ADMISSIONS MAY CLOSE FOR UNRESERVED CATEGORY IN SOME COURSES

The principal of Kirori Mal College, Vibha Chauhan says that rooms will be converted to single occupancy. Hence, the 200 seats in the male hostel will be reduced. Even Indraprastha College, which has an occupancy of 450 will now accommodation only 225.

New DU students demand college hostels:

Several female students often rely on the college’s hostel facilities for affordability and safety. Namrata Kalita, a new DU student at Indraprastha considers college hostels as the safest. Also, they are considered better in terms of fooding, cleaning, and other facilities.
