It has been demanded by the BJP that the uniform of civil defense volunteers be changed to some other color instead of the present khaki color as some of them take harass people by taking undue advantage.
A letter has been written by Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shanker Kapoor to Lt. Governor Anil Baijal saying in the name of implementation of COVID appropriate behavior, the people were being harassed.
Against the backdrop of Monday’s incident, the letter has been written, during which a heated argument between a 20-year-old student and Delhi Civil Defense (DCD) volunteers who were issuing challans to people not wearing masks. At a traffic signal in South Delhi, it turned violent.
Allegedly, the volunteers hit the student with a belt after which along with a few other people, the students attacked them. Both parties have registered FIRs at the Hauz Khas police station.
Kapoor wrote that he has all trust in the intention of the government of ensuring that people wear masks but there have been several complaints of Civil Defense Volunteers indulging in extortion by threatening to challan.
He wrote that the wearing of khaki uniform by these Civil Defense Volunteers was under question with complaints of those volunteers exceeding their COVID duty and being involved in extortion. He, therefore, demanded that an inquiry is ordered into the process of enrolment of Civil Defense Volunteers and their duty deployment, and also order a change of their dress color from khaki to some other color that does not resemble police or defense service.
SDM Saket, Ankita Mishra, after the incident of Monday had said that as far as civil defense volunteers were concerned, they must understand that all of them were not the same. That force had always been with them serving at places where nobody else would, be it the quarantine centers, vaccination sites, or testing camps. They of course do not deny one or two cases of misconduct, for which strict action had always been taken.
