The All-India Technical Education Council (AICTE) has recently published its authorization Access Handbook for the academic year 2021-22, which states that mathematics and physics would not be mandatory subjects for students looking to advance engineering.
As per the manual, students pursuing admission to undergraduate engineering courses do not need to have mathematics and physics as their core subjects in class 12. This rule will be enforced in the coming academic year 2021-22.
For now, all candidates must have mathematics and physics as their subjects in class 12 if they like to be admitted to engineering colleges in India. According to the new rules laid down by AICTE, students are expected to select their subjects from the list below.

Students applying for admission to the engineering colleges can select three, from the following list of subjects:
- Biology
- Information practices
- Technical vocational subject
- Biotechnology
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
- Computer science
- Electronics and IT
- Physics
- Business studies
- Engineering
- Agriculture
Besides the shift in subjects for students seeking to be engineers, AICTE also claimed that now the unreserved category of students must have achieved 45 percent, and the reserved category of students must score 40 percent to pass class 12.

Since physics and mathematics will not be compulsory for students in class 12, AICTE has introduced few bridge courses in mathematics and physics by engineering colleges to improve the foundation of these subjects for students in the initial semesters.
Many have suggested that class 12 physics and mathematics are completely necessary for engineering students and, as a result, the recent reforms introduced by AICTE have attracted some opposition from teachers and universities from all over the country.
Multiple new courses, such as computer science and artificial intelligence, would require a great deal of knowledge of mathematics, researchers said. They recommend that AICTE must reconsider the suggestions made to abolish these subjects for engineering applicants in India.
