Arvind Kejriwal

On Friday, CM Arvind Kejriwal said that he has written to the Union education Ministry seeking amendments in the Delhi University Act. He has sought this amendment so that more colleges and universities can be established in Delhi.

Kejriwal, while addressing an online media briefing said that to provide higher education opportunities to students, there is a need to open more colleges and universities.

He said that only 1.25 lakh students out of the 2.5 lakh students that pass 12 board exams get admission in city colleges.

There are 91 colleges and institutions that are affiliated to the Delhi University while 127 colleges and institutions are affiliated to the IP University, he said.

He also mentioned that Section 5(2) of the Delhi University Act says that new colleges that are established in the city of Delhi must be affiliated to the University of Delhi.

Delhi University has not given affiliation to any new college in the last 30 years and it may be because of its full capacity, Kejriwal claimed.

He said that he has requested the Union Education Minister to amend Section 5(2) of the Delhi University Act so as to enable the establishment of more colleges and universities in Delhi.
