To enter the e-learning market this year, Jawaharlal Nehru University intends to launch several short-term online learning courses for students nationwide, officials announced on Friday. According to them, the university is developing strategies to build the necessary infrastructure for on-campus e-learning for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and rural areas.

SHORT-TERM ONLINE LEARNING COURSES BY JNU

According to B S Balaji, chairperson of JNU’s Special Centre for E-learning, “JNU is building the infrastructure to help faculty members produce these courses with the help of a Rs 455 crore HEFA loan”, according to PTI. He said the institution intends to put up a soundproof, camera-equipped video recording room where instructors can conduct or record these classes.

ONLINE LEARNING COURSES

As part of its undergraduate program on Indian Arctic Policy (IAP), JNU plans to provide a four-credit, fifteen-week massive open online course (MOOC) on climate and environment protection this year to students nationwide. The course has been approved by the University Grants Commission, according to Balaji.

OTHER ONLINE LEARNING COURSES AND DIGI-CAMPUSĀ 

Soon, the university will launch six to eight open online courses. They are in languages, political science, social sciences, and international relations, he added. The SWAYAM platform will be used to deliver these courses. He also mentioned that some of the courses will be hosted on the JNU Digii campus’s LMS portal.

The courses designed for the JNU Digii campus will initially only be available to JNU students. the institution plans to investigate making the courses available to students nationwide, according to Balaji.

When students pass the exam administered by NTA after the term, they will be able to claim credits related to these courses on their Academic Bank of Credits. A large number of the courses created for JNU-LMS are expected to be integrated into other UG and PG programs in the future.

“Every effort will be made by JNU to convert these courses into full-fledged programs shortly at the earliest,” said the official. According to him, MOOCs offered through SWAYAM are free. whereas courses offered through JNU LMS may have a little price charged by the university.

REQUIREMENTS TO JOIN THESE COURSES

There aren’t any requirements to join SWAYAM classes at this time. The official stated that the JNU-LMS course entrance requirements will be determined based on the course. There will be both live and recorded lectures in these short-term courses. He also mentioned peer learning, discussion forums, and prearranged interactions via online platforms as options for students to get their questions answered.
