Jamia Millia Islamia is contemplating on merit-based admissions for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered in Jamia for this year’s admission process in case it is unable to conduct entrance tests due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This was informed by an official who is aware and familiar with the development.
The varsity usually holds entrance exams for giving admission to 56 undergraduate and 15 postgraduate courses to the students in the month of June every year. Owing to the pandemic situation this year, the entrance tests have not been held till now.
On the condition of anonymity, a senior official informed that the university has asked all candidates to upload mark sheets of the qualifying exams in its portal. “We have asked them to upload mark sheets of the qualifying exams as in case the situation arises to take admission on the basis of merit, we should have all the data,” shared the official.
Recently a circular issued by the university’s office of controller (examination) on August 20 inquired about the candidates who have already applied to upload their mark sheets on the admission portal.
“All aspiring candidates are required to upload mark sheets of qualifying examinations, including those who have already filled in online application forms using their login id and password,” the circular outline.
The admission portal of the university displays a message, stating, “Please reconfirm that you have filled all academic details properly. Merit list would be prepared based on the data entered by you here. No further claims for changes will be entertained.”
Ahmad Azeem, Media coordinator of Jamia, said, “No decision has been taken yet. We have already extended the last date to September 14 for the submission of online application forms for admission to various programs. Candidates expressed and shared their concern over the speculated possible changes in the admission process at the very last moment.
Kaif Jilani who is a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly, who is seeking admission in an integrated course of BA-LLB said that there were many students who do not have scored well enough in class 12 to make it in the merit list based admission process. She further added that she has also scored 78% marks in class 12 and that Jamia was her only hope as it does not only considers marks of the qualifying exams as the only criteria. She shared her concern that she might not have any chance to get admission in Jamia if the admission will be done on the basis of merit-based criteria.
A student from Patna, Suhail Ahmed said that a lot of students who have passed out from non-CBSE schools will suffer because of this. He completed his schooling from the Bihar board and did not score 90% and above. He shares as he had no chance to get admission in Delhi University, so after that Jamia was his only hope. He finds it difficult to get admission if the admission procedure was shifted to merit-based criteria.
