The Humanities at Delhi University remains the main focus of attraction this year with almost all major colleges in the varsity increasing their cut-offs in English, History and Political Science under graduate honours programmes. Delhi University had received around 5.19 lakh applications for English, Political Science, History and BA programme course.
This year Hindu College witnessed a jump of two percentage points for Political Science with the cut-off being kept at this year among these colleges. Principal of Hindu College Anju Srivastava attributed this to the university’s rule of having to provide admission to all the students who clear cut-offs. She said that last year despite keeping a high cut-off, they admitted four times more students than the available number of seats in unreserved category. She also said that last year they had admitted 81 students under the unreserved category.
Hindu College increased its cut-off from last year to this year for History (Honours). Lady Shri Ram College and Hindu College kept the cut-off at for English (Honours) while Miranda House locking their number at .
English received the highest number of applications (1,42,970) this year for approximately 2400 undergraduate seats offered by the university as per the case of 2018. According to the head of English department of Hansraj College , the demand of Humanities courses has gone up in the past few years.
He said that the rise in cut-offs is the direct result of the increasing demand for the courses. All these courses help in honing communication skills of students, which will allow them to pursue an array of options. Civil services have become one of the good choices and humanities subjects allow students to prepare better for their adminsrative exams.
Delhi University’s reputation, affordability and the number of colleges it offers are among the many reasons why students apply for these courses.
