research and development

Delhi University (DU) envisions strengthening its research and development department. Hence, all this will assist DU in fetching and improving its global rank. However, a section of professors believes that the social science department should be excluded from the fund allocation.

The varsity has also been an Institute of Eminence (IoE) now. Hence, for the research and development activities, Delhi University (DU) will release the IoE funds to professors. The research and development initiative was stopped in the year 2015 under the previous dispensation. However, it will restart in 2021.

The allocation of the  research and development funds:

P C Joshi, the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor stated that the IoE funds will be disbursed in the departments and colleges. Hence, the teachers will be eligible for applying for their projects and will also be subjected to evaluation. The Institute of Eminence (IoE) Council will govern such activities. Therefore, until now, approximately 5 crores INR has already been allocated.

However, certain concerns were raised regarding the allocation in the Executive Council (EC) meeting. This meeting took place last week in March. In this EC meeting, a section of professors asserted that the social science department could be kept out of these grants. Therefore, Seema Das, an EC member requested the varsity to look into the problems faced by the social science researchers.

The restart of Research and Development Activities:

Under the DU Vice-Chancellor, Yogesh Tyagi, the absence of grants did start in 2015. Back in those times, project proposals for teachers were made after the expert screening. However, such activities stopped which led to the fall of the research quotient. DU did not even organize enough conferences and seminars.

DUTA TO CONTINUE STRIKE UNTIL THEIR DEMANDS ARE FULFILLED

The fate of the social science department:

Abhijit Kundu, associate professor in sociology at Sri Venkateswara College said that social science is a relevant subject in current times. However, generating funds for research and development in social science is difficult. Hence, the professor requests the varsity to understand the fact that teachers need to do enough research. Hence, then only will they acquire the necessary points required for promotion. Therefore, VC Joshi clarifies that grants for the social science department will also start.
