Fake Universities

Fake Universities are those that are running against the UGC Act of 1956. These universities are in the eye of the storm. UGC advises students and their parents to be alert before admission fake institutions. And, it is taking strict actions against them.

Further, fake universities come into the spotlight due to the pupils’ complaints. Across India, there are many fake higher institutions running and complaints are coming from various states, and Union Territories.

How many fake universities are in India? 

To alert the students and parents who are seeking admission, the higher education regulator released a public notice on its website. Presently, there are 21 fake institutions on the list of UGC. Moreover, most of the non-recognised universities are located in the country’s capital, Delhi. Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh have one fake institution each. And, four in Uttarpradesh, two in west Bengal and Odisha. For instance, the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) and the All India Institute of Public & Physical Health Sciences.

Furthermore, the Anti MalPractice Cell or AMPC is the function cell for controlling the mushrooming of fake institutions. It came into existence on 30 May 1996. All the issues related to fake institutions are handled by AMPC. 

According to Pankaj Mittal who is the secretary-general of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) said, “Any university or institution that is not set up by the central or state act is known as a fake university under the UGC section 23. Therefore, these kinds of institutions if they use the term ‘University’ will come under the category of illegal.” He added ‘Their degree provides no value in students’ life. And, we know about these fake institutions in our country via UGC.”
