Delhi University has recently issued a missive instructing the DU colleges to assess and give admission under the special drive to students who canceled their admission before 27th December. The Delhi University colleges and teachers have raised concerns regarding the same while questioning the sudden change in the University rules under the third special cutoff drive. They also stated that the new provision is unfair to the students who had heeded the rules and had not canceled their admissions.

Under the last two special cutoff drives, Delhi University had said that the list was issued only for those students who had not taken admission in any of the DU colleges. The parents and DU professors further questioned the fairness of the merit-based admission system as the cutoffs in the DU special drive have been falling considerably.

On 29th December, when DU admissions under the third special drive cutoff were nearing completion, Delhi University issued a circular to its colleges after 2 PM clarifying that students who had canceled their admissions before 27th December should not be considered for admission. DU Principals were asked to prepare the list of vacant seats taking this norm into account.

An administrative officer at a Delhi University college said that the new notification came when the merit list was already made and the admission process was completed. He added that a student from the commerce stream earlier who took admission into B.A. (programme) canceled his admission and reapplied for admission to B.Com as the special cutoff came down in the third cutoff list. However, based on the new rule, the administration had to rescind the admission.

Citing another issue, a professor at Ramjas College said that a student who earlier took admission to History (Hons.) at Lady Shri Ram College later wanted to migrate to English (Hons.) at Ramjas. As per the new rule we had to cancel the application and fill our seats. Now, the University of Delhi expects the colleges to redo the entire admission process. Unfortunately, most of the students are oblivious of the renewed notification which allows admitting those students who earlier canceled their admission before 27th December.

A DU college principal stated that the new rule is creating problems for everyone in the colleges. We will be in a perilous situation if any student moves to the court.

Director of Delhi University Computer Science Center, Sanjeev Singh said that the students were given time to make the fee payment till 31st December. He added that the new order is in favor of those students who canceled their admission due to some reason. The DU college principals will now have to look into each case and put the application before the admission committee.
