IIT Madras launched a ‘Young Research Fellow’ program for undergraduate students. This initiative is made to motivate students to know about their careers in research. This program is inspired by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is open to all the final year students of undergraduate and dual degree students of IIT Madras.

Students will be able to interact with the IIT faculty and participate in the research. Students will attain a personal benefit through a ‘career and life coaching’ program. This was delivered in 1979 by expert professional coaches. This program is funded by the 1979 batch. The MoU was signed by the dean of IIT Madras and twenty-four other alumni of 1979 on behalf of the whole 1979 batch. Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthy stated the importance and impact of the undergraduate program. He said that IIT Madras is a research-intensive university and is known for world-class undergraduate students.

IT IS A ONE YEAR RESEARCH PROGRAM ENCOURAGING MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROJECTS

This program provides an opportunity for students to learn about the detailed concept in research at an early stage. Applications of this program will be examined by the senior faculty member. This program is for one year and about 20 fellowships will be awarded in the first year. It will encourage multidisciplinary projects. Prof. Anantha Chandrakasan is the founder of the special UROP Program and also advised upon the creation of the Young Research Fellow program. He wished all the success for the YRF program. This program will enable Undergraduate students to have deeper learning in research and innovations. This program will help them to have a wide range of career path and their graduate studies. The industry and academic partners are in favor of the YRF Programme at IIT Madras and showed keen interest. This program at IIT Madras received a lot of encouragement and support.

THIS PROGRAM IS CONCEPTUALIZED BY THE ALUMNI OF IIT MADRAS

It will provide scientific exploration to the students. Students will be able to execute research projects in any department for interdisciplinary projects. Prof. Panchagnula, Dean of IIT Madras thanked the alumni class 1979. He said that the batch of 1979 has supported a unique program that is innovative. This program will help up building a deep interest in research and technology among the brightest students of India. The YRF Program at IIT Madras is conceptualized by the alumni of 1979. The members of 1979 along with the team of 30 members handled different elements like program structure, fundraising, financial strategy planning, and marketing. All the mentors and founders are personally involved in raising this YRF program with immense success.

STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO PRESENT THEIR WORK AT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Nathu Sarath, the alumni of 1979 is a leading venture capitalist and the head of venture east. This program enables students to become competitive and successful in whatever career they choose. Not only in research, but in engineering consulting, investment banking, product management, etc. He also said that they are fortunate to have the best faculty at IIT Madras who always motivate these young minds. Students who would be selected for this program will be paid a monthly honorarium along with research guidance by IIT Madras faculty. They will be allowed to participate in sessions and lectures on research skills and can avail mentorship by the 1979 batch. Students will be encouraged to publish their research in international journals. They will get an opportunity to present their work at an international conference for which they will get travel support.
