Delhi University had passed an order to charge various analytical instrument fee from researchers. The charges range from Rs 20 to Rs 300. Further, on Friday, some research scholars protested on the matter at the university.

Professor Balaram Pani, DU Dean of Colleges said that Delhi University is charging a nominal fee. Moreover, the charges are on sophisticated analytical instruments. These are maintained by the University Science Instrumentation Center (USIC). Further, charges were implemented from 1 May 2022.

As per the research scholar’s letter, “We believe that this act of charging is highly dismal. This came into effect without any serious reasoning. Beside, we all students have stepped into this prestigious University with an idea to contribute to science. And, favorable and easy availability of instruments assists in qualitative research. However, most of the research groups have limited funding for research. And this limited funding includes the contingency amount given by UGC/CSIR.”

Furthermore, the letter said, “The funds available are not enough even to make availability of chemicals, solvents, glassware and likewise. Though, we make sure to manage our research process. “

The objective of writing the letter is to request the Delhi University vice-chancellor regarding withdrawing the notice. But, Balaram Pani said that the university doesn’t want to burden students financially. Therefore, universities are demanding nominal analytical instrument fee and students also get scholarships.
