A few days ago, a complaint was filed against Delhi University Hindu College Professor Rattan Lal. The complaint was filed as he posted offensive claims on the recent Varanasi Gyanvapi mosque row. Now, he has been arrested on Friday. 

Professor Rattan Lal is 50 years old and teaches History at Hindu College, DU. On Tuesday, he posted controversial comments with a photo of ‘Shivling’. Thereafter he started receiving backlash from social media. 

When his Facebook post went viral, Ratan Lal also received online threats. As a result, he asked for security and a gun license for his security. He requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help. 

According to the police officer, firstly Prof Lal was summoned for the questioning trial. Then, he got arrested. Sagar Singh Kalsi, North DCP confirms Rattan Lal’s arrest on Friday. After the arrest, the All India Students Association said that the protest was made outside the Maurice Nagar police station. In the protest, many student groups were included.

Prof Rattan Lal arrested under IPC sections 153-A, 295-A

The case filed against Rattan Lal was filed under IPC sections 153-A and 295-A. To clarify, IPC section 153-A is for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion. Whereas, 295-A for malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings. On Tuesday, a social worker filed a complaint against him at Cyber Police Station.

Furthermore, Prof Lal said, “I didn’t imagine that I would receive online threats and abuse after posting my views on the Gyanvapi mosque row. And, there is a tradition of criticism in the Hindu Religion from Phule, Ambedkar, and Ravidas. However, I didn’t even comment against Hinduism. It was my opinion.” He added, “In India, everyone’s religious sentiments hurt on every small thing. Then what people are supposed to do, just put bandages on their mouths?”
