The month of romance and love has started. While couples from all over the country are eagerly waiting for 14th February (Valentine’s Day 2021). Couples take a chance on love on this day and exchange gifts with their partners. Events and special occasions are organized at various places to celebrate this day and its universal notion. Contrary to its message, people even fall into strange practices in the name of love. One such strange practice of worshiping virgin tree is prevalent in the University of Delhi which asked a criticism and scrutiny.
The very famous tree in the University of Delhi also known as the Virgin Tree at DU’s Hindu College is the site for the annual Valentine’s Day Damadami Mai Puja. On this day students from boys hostels on campus gather around it, believing the popular myth that offering prayers to the tree will make them fall in love within six months.
Since the Delhi University has not opened entirely, the hostel at DU’s Hindu College will remain closed during the event. The famous practice of worshiping a virgin tree might not take place this year.
As per the campus stories, some Delhi University students would offer their prayers before the Virgin Tree on the premises of Hindu College. Not only the students worship this Virgin tree but also tie contraceptives on the tree.

On Valentine’s Day, Delhi University’s Hindu College students worship a virgin tree as a ritual. They not only worship the tree but also tie condoms on this tree. The teachers of Hindu College have always opposed this practice which has been continuing for many years. Whereas the female students of the college said that the custom represents women as objects. Women have raised their voices against this practice several times.
