Haryana is set to include Yoga in the school curriculum in government schools as a separate subject starting from April 1, 2021. This decision aims to develop the habit of yoga among the students right from the start. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar while chairing the meeting of the Yoga Council of Haryana, the State Home Minister Anil Vij and Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev, who was also the brand ambassador of Haryana for the promotion of Yoga and Ayurveda in the state said that Haryana will become the first state in the country to make yoga part of school education.
A government spokesperson said on Wednesday that students are already being taught from the academic session 2016-17. Moreover, it has now been decided to make yoga a compulsory or optional subject in the school curriculum and the School Education Department has constituted a committee for this purpose. The subject syllabus will be designed in such a way that it will have both theoretical and practical material on the pattern of physical education so that apart from education, students can also get yoga training.
Khattar stated that the state government aims to take yoga to the ground level and encourage everyone to make it a part of their lifestyle. For this, Yoga and Vyayamshalas and other adequate basic facilities are being made available at the village level. The Development and Panchayat Department has also been directed to submit a proposal for setting up 1000 more yoghalas in the state within a week.
The Department of AYUSH has been directed to take up the matter on a priority basis for the establishment of wellness centers in Yogashalas under the state plan and to finalize preventive activities in these centers at the earliest. The focus should be on promoting Yoga and Naturopathy to reduce dependence on the medicine.
