The other frontrunners are Professor Nitin R Karmalkar and professor Avinash Chandra Pandey. Professor Nitin R Karmalkar is the vice-chancellor of Pune University. Professor Avinash Chandra Pandey is the director of IUAC, Inter-University Accelerator Centre.

The selecting committee is preferring these two candidates as well. Professor DP Singh has announced his retirement at the age of 65. Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with the appointment committee will discuss the selection of chairman. On the other hand, IIT Delhi is also in need of a candidate for the post of the director.
