World’s Hypertension Day 2020: World Hypertension Day is celebrated on May 17 every year worldwide. The purpose of celebrating this day is to spread awareness about high blood pressure and encourage people to control this silent killer. People are made aware of hypertension on this special day.

They are also told how to prevent this dangerous disease. High blood pressure is a silent killer illness, as most people do not notice any external symptoms or clues. Regular headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness, limb twitching, and runny nose in adverse conditions are some of the minor symptoms that people do not pay much attention to.

Hypertension occurs due to many reasons, some of which are physical and some are mental. Blood pressure reaches beyond 140 in hypertension.

WHY IS WORLD’S HYPERTENSION CELEBRATED

Due to wrong eating and wrong habits, people start having hypertension problems. This day is dedicated to spreading awareness among people regarding hypertension. This 2021, the main theme and aim of the World High Blood Pressure Day are to Measure Your Blood Pressure and stay safe.

This notifies that check your blood pressure, control it and stay safe also to live longer. High blood pressure is a disease that is known as a silent killer. Most people find out late that they have any of this problem. In such a situation, if you want to avoid drugs, then change your lifestyle.

High blood pressure is an illness that can be prevented, but it resides a major cause of death worldwide. According to the National Family Health 2017 Survey, it is found that one in every eight Indians is a hypertensive patient.

WHAT IS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Hypertension is another name for high blood pressure. The blood present in our body runs continuously in the veins and the blood, oxygen, glucose, vitamins, minerals, etc are required for energy and nutrition to all the organs of the body.

Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure that plummets on the walls of the veins due to blood flow. This blood pressure usually depends on the rate at which the heart is pumping blood and how many obstructions the blood is experiencing to flow through the veins.

As per the medical advice, blood pressure greater than 130/80 mmHg falls under the category of hypertension or high blood pressure.

LACK OF AWARENESS AMONG PEOPLE

There is a lack of awareness among people about Hypertension. High blood pressure is a silent killer as most people do not see any external signs and symptoms. Regular headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness, flaking skin, and runny nose in adverse conditions are some of the minor symptoms that go unnoticed and remain uncontrolled and untreated.

According to a recent study by PLOS Medicine, despite the increasing trend of hypertension, diagnosis and treatment are very low. More than half of the people suffering from high blood pressure are unaware of it. Hypertension accounts for about 10.8% of all deaths in India and 4.6% of life years affected by disability.

Even though these figures, it is surprising why there is so small awareness among the general public about this situation!
