TRP can be defined as a device that measures the success of a show on TV screens. The TRP full form is decided to be Television Rating Point. It indicates the growth or decline in viewership of specific shows. Moreover, one can come to know that which show gained popularity or was viewed the greatest number of times on the Television screens.
The number of viewers is TRP is directly proportional to each other. It means that higher TRP reflects a higher number of viewers of that particular show or channel. It gives an index of the people’s choice of channels or shows.
Television Rating Point which is TRP full form is an important tool that is beneficial for the advertisers. They decide the media time as advertisers want shows with greater TRP. They want to put up ads during programs of higher TRP. It will ensure that the product or service being advertised reach a wide audience.
It’s also beneficial for the investors as they can choose after going through the TRP of the channel or program. Investors can decide where to spend their money. TRP indicates the popularity of the show and how many times it is watched by the viewers.
Thus, advertisers and investors are the stakeholders in knowing the TRP of a channel or program. They get to know the mood of the people.
TOOL FOR MEASURING TRP
A device referred to as the People meter is used to determine the TRP. This device is connected to the TV sets of a few thousand individuals. It must be noted that this includes a sample of few households living in an area. The device is fitted in some selected households. It’s solely for judging purposes. The viewers are surveyed in form of sampling or justice. The data thus collected is viewed as surveys which give details of the TV owners living in various geographical and demographic areas.
In this system, the Indian Television Audience measurement (INTM) works to analyze information about the program and channel for one minute. Then the team calculates the TRP of the program or channel.
TWO METHODS TO CALCULATE TRP
- PICTURE MATCHING METHOD
The people meter which is attached to the TV sets examines a tiny portion of the picture which is displayed continuously on a specific television set. Then in this system, the information is collected from the TV sets which are part of the survey. This data is used for the National Rating Calculation.
- Frequency Monitoring Technique
Television Rating Point the TRP full form is calculated by this method. The people meter attached to the TV sets calculates and records the program watched by the audience and the time devoted in a particular day. The average is calculated from the information collected in 30 days. It gives the viewership status of a specific channel. The data collected in form of pictures is then used by the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to analyze the Television Rating Point.
TRP rate refers to the rate at which the TRP of any channel or program is calculated. TRP is dependent on the program displayed on the TV.
RESULT OF TRP INCREASE OR DECREASE
The income of the channel gets affected by the increase and decrease in TRP of any program. As the major income comes from the advertisers, thus they will invest their money in the channels with high Television Rating Point which is TRP full form. High TRP means more people are watching the program on a particular channel. More viewers mean more reach for advertisers.
If the TRP of a channel is low then advertisers will give them a few advertisements. Thus, the channel will earn less. More TRP indicates more viewers which leads to more advertisers thus, more money. The advertisers will try to schedule ads at the time of the program which has high TRP.
BROADCAST AUDIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL
It was founded in 2014 as a TRP calculator. Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) is known as the world’s largest television audience measurement service.
On the joint venture with TAM, it is the only rating body in our country for the broadcasting sector. BARC is founded by bodies of stakeholders like Advertisers and Advertising Agencies, Media Agencies, and Broadcasters Currently, BARC India has 22,000 Bar-O-meters in the country. They must increase by 10,000 annually. By four operations it will reach 50,000.
It has launched the service with 277 subscribed channels to calculate TRP India.
It lets the stakeholders make informed media and content decisions.
The Indian agency Broadcast Audience Research Council calculates the TRP India. It has installed “BAR-O-METERS” in few households as a sample. In over 45,000 households this meter is installed for justice and surveying. It is a form of People meter that records the channels or programs watched by the surveyed households.
The TRP calculator BARC releases TRP India week wise every Thursday. It displays the rank of all TV channels and programs. The list of top viewing channels and programs are also available.
ONE TRP IS EQUAL TO HOW MANY VIEWERS
One TRP is equal to 1 percent of the viewers in a specific minute in the defined city. TRP ratings are measured in each minute. The average across the duration of a program is the final rating of the show or program. The TRP rate is calculated by keeping the numerator as the number of impressions from the sample and the total target audience is designated the role of the denominator and it is multiplied by 100.
If there is an impression of 1,00,000 in the total audience of 10,00,000 then the TRP would be:
1,00,000/ 10,00,000 *100 = 10 TRP Rating
In today’s world, a TRP rating of 3 is considered good and satisfactory. The channel executives and the advertisers will be happy with a steady TRP rating of 3 TRPS’s.
In Television, as mentioned before BARC releases the list of Number of impressions every Thursday.
BARC showed the list of top TRP India. The data of Week 47 from Saturday 21st November 2020 to 27th November i.e., Friday. In the All India Ranking STAR UTSAV topped the list by 1077623 impressions followed by SUN TV with 893761 and STAR PLUS with 855490 impressions.
