Common Admission Test (CAT 2020) for admission to the major B-schools in India is scheduled for 29 November 2020. It has been noticed that this year there is a major dip in the number of applicants. CAT 2020 has received only 2.30 lakhs applications in comparison to 2.44 lakhs in the previous year i.e. CAT 2019. These records have been stated by the Institute of Management (IIM), Indore which will be conducting CAT 2020. This is a major slide and it is also the lowest since CAT 2016.

This drop in the number of registrations have come in such times when the economy of the nation is sliding downhill and the unemployment toll is aiming skies. As per the IIM-Director Himanshu Rai, the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic is not a major reason for it and has only little to do with it. He and many other directors along have termed this dip in the number of registrations as “marginal”. The drop of 14000 is not much major as per IIM-Sambalpur director Mahadeo Jaiswal. He added that such variations have been noticed in other years as well.

The exam will be conducted maintaining all the suggested protocol of COVID-19. Sumanta Basu, former CAT convener, views the safety concerns due to COVID-19 as a reason for the drop in the number of registration. She also shared that all the uncertainty associated with the and the safety norms of appearing in the exams must be one of the major reasons. Further, she stated that other exams like engineering entrance exams also had a significant number of absentees.

The scene of a lesser number of jobs due to the spread of the pandemic is also being considered as a reason by several IIMs.
