Jamia Violence: On Friday, the Delhi High Court tried to know from Delhi Police what move they had made against police officers who supposedly utilized excessive force against Jamia Milia Islamia students during the violence that had broken out at the university in December a year ago.
A bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan, Referring to a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) report on the Jamia violence, said that it had brought up cases of police violence and that no action had been made up until now.
It also asked the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aman Lekhi to represent the Delhi Police, whether an FIR was lodged against the police officers.
Lekhi stated that an investigation is on individual cases where some police officers utilized excessive force. However, he said the NHRC report supports police intervention.
The Court mentioned that they need to satisfy them as what move has been taken against those individual cases. FIRs have been reported against those police officers or not?
The court was hearing a lot of requests looking for help in the Jamia violence while asking for a court-monitored probe or the constitution of an SIT in the issue.
Lekhi supported the police activity, saying the authorities were obliged on the grounds that there was stone-pelting from inside the varsity. He said the crowd began vandalizing the properties and hindering the streets.
To this, the bench commented that the contention isn’t that they don’t have the right to enter the University. The contention is that they ought to have taken earlier endorsement of the administrator before doing as such.
After student protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), violence had broken out in the varsity. Police have been blamed for entering the grounds and attacking students after fights against the Act turned violence on December 15.

At any rate, 10 vehicles were purportedly burnt by the protestor. The Jamia students had said they were not associated with the brutality and that their peaceful march was seized by outsiders.
