The JEE Main 2024 registration process has begun. All the aspirants are gearing up for this prestigious engineering entrance exam. What is the 75% Eligibility Criterion in JEE Main 2024?

For candidates aspiring to secure admission to the NITs, IIITs, and other CFTIs based on their JEE Main ranks, the 75% eligibility criterion mandates that they should have scored a least of 75% in their Class 12 examinations. But, for SC/ST candidates, the required marks 65%. Additionally, candidates need to pass each of the subjects of their Class 12 or qualifying examination.

The Exception: Covid-19 Pandemic Waiver

The 75% eligibility criterion for JEE Main garnered significant attention in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. For three consecutive editions of JEE Main, beginning in 2020, this criterion was waived off. This decision aimed to reduce the challenges students faced during the pandemic.

The Controversy in 2023

In 2023, the eligibility criterion was for JEE Main changed catching many candidates by surprise. This sudden change created large controversy. Candidates, especially repeaters, who couldn’t meet the 75% rule in Class 12 exams, found themselves in a difficult situation.

Protests erupted, and many individuals, including MP’s voiced their concerns on social media. The demand was clear: revert to the previous waiver.

A Revised Approach

Amid the outcry, the Union Education Ministry introduced a revised eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2023. Apart from the All India Rank in JEE Main, candidates were given two options. First , scoring 75% or more in the Class 12 board exams or second, ranking among the top 20 percentile in their board exams.

Challenges Remain

Yet, even with this revised approach, there were concerns about the lack of uniformity in the ‘top 20 percentile’ criterion, as it varied from board to board. Despite protests, letters to the government, and court hearings, the 75% eligibility criterion remained intact in JEE Main exams leaving students in stress and dilemma.
