The University Grants Commission, UGC has released a new draft that allows the establishment of foreign University campus freely in India. They will have full power over deciding the admission process and fee structure. Consequently, the DU Teachers’ body said that it will pose a threat to Indian democracy.

Further, DU Teachers’ Fronts (DTF) wants students, parents, and stakeholders to oppose this UGC draft. Otherwise, it will add profit-oriented universities to our country at the expense of students’ education. As per DTF, foreign universities will provide education at a high fee structure. As a result, the majority of students can’t afford education.

According to the DTF, UGC policy on foreign universities is nothing but ‘peddling fallacious dreams of an Ivy League education at affordable costs.’ Presently, most of the public-funded universities are lacking in funds which results in the slow degradation of education quality. And the institute was left with no way except to take loans. Side by side this leads to an increase in the cost of the program.

“The higher the cost of education the higher the number of education-deprived students. Moreover, it will result in a mismatch between the availability of skilled workers and the demand for workers”, added DTF.

DTF on UGC regulations on Academic Bank Of Credits

Besides UGC allowing the setting up of foreign University campus, DTF calls off University Grants Commission regulations on ABC and credit framework for online courses. Online courses running through SWAYAM are a clear intention of the government to degrade the quality of education.

Furthermore, the Academic Bank of Credit and National Credit Framework allows candidates to complete 50% of their course through online teaching. Whereas 40% of each paper was taught through video lectures. Consequently, 70 percent of courses convert to online mode. Moreover, the government is further planning to begin National Digital University which will allow students to pursue full courses online.
