The virus was first observed in China and in January 2020 the World Health Organization named it as coronavirus. The first case emerged in India on 30th January 2020 and it was the first wave of this infectious disease.
LOCKDOWN IN INDIA
The Prime Minister of India declared a lockdown of some days due to COVID-19 to eradicate the spread of this disease. Due to the lockdown, all the educational institutions, as well as schools and colleges, malls, shops, restaurants, movie halls, and offices, were shut down temporarily. Students of class 12 had their board exams. At that time, the exams which were left were canceled by the authorities.
Due to the nationwide lockdown, educational institutions began taking classes virtually and started using digital platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams. Teachers are teaching online from the day due to the shutdown. All the educational institutions and common shops and services were shut down. Indian economy was the most affected.
FIRST CASE OF COVID 19 IN INDIA
The first case was observed in Kerala and from there onwards 3 cases were rose. If we talk about other countries like Saudi Arabia, the first case emerged to a 76-year-old man. On12th March, under the provisions of the epidemic disease, Act 1897, the government took this step to close all the educational and commercial institutions. Also, nobody was allowed to enter or exit from the country. Their visas were suspended and the state government took various measures to eradicate the spread of coronavirus.
At that time, there was no vaccination and social distancing was the only way to eradicate the spread of this disease. Only the government hospitals were treating the persons with COVID positive reports. A person who would be COVID positive was transferred to some hospital and was in quarantine for at least 14 days.
WHAT IS BREAKING THE CHAIN OF TRANSMISSION?
India adopted a policy of breaking the chain of transmission at that time. The National Institute of virology released a test kit for rapid testing of coronavirus. People were trying to generate some vaccination for this disease. Talking about the commercial establishments, the Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal ordered the closure of all the restaurants by 31st March 2020.
Proceeding further on 20 March, all the restaurants were shut down in Lucknow as well. Only the vegetable grocery and medicine shops were allowed to open. Different sectors were affected differently. Due to this nationwide pandemic, India is one of the most affected countries. During this global pandemic, although the lockdown was imposed for some days only but it was continued for several months. At a time, India ranked at the second position with the highest number of cases in the world.
COVID 19 EFFECT ON INDIAN ECONOMY
The Indian economy was declining day by day. So, the government did not have any option other than restricting the nation in a phased manner. The restrictions due to lockdown seized many economic activities and different sectors were affected. Millions of people lost their job and their annual incomes as well.
Talking about the healthcare sector, it was the epicenter during this pandemic. The cases were increasing day by day and India did not have enough infrastructure for admitting patients. This resulted in a shortage of beds and a lack of protection equipments. Only four percent of patients could use the ICU beds. Rest 78% of patients were urged to use connections to secure an ICU bed.
EFFECT ON GDP DUE TO COVID 19
During the first quarter of the fiscal year, the gross domestic product of India declined by 23.9% and this led to a sudden shutdown of businesses industries, and different services. Every service was affected ranging from manufacturing to real estate, hospitality to mining. Due to the collapsing of these sectors and services the Indian economy was highly affected.
UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE NATION
They faced unemployment because 21 million employees lost their job from April to August. Many employees did not get their salaries for a few months. If we look at the survey of the center of monitoring Indian economy, there were 65 million people who were salaried out of 86 million people. India was in a vulnerable state in the first two months of the lockdown. Also, the suicide rate was increased.
People did not have jobs and they were facing poverty due to which some people even committed suicide. Among the worst impacted sectors of India, the travel and tourism industry is the one. Nobody was allowed to gather at a place and every monument and historical place of India was not allowed to visit. People were not allowed to come from outside the nation and go to some other country. People were not even allowed to transfer from one state to another. Due to this, the tourism and travel industry was affected the most.
Hotels and tour operators faced a tremendous loss. Indian Railways was shut down and the Metro rail services were not in operation from 25th March.
METRO OPERATIONS IN INDIA
The Prime Minister of India seized the services of Metro rail. After March, it was under operation from 7th September and that was also with certain rules and guidelines. During the shutdown of Metro services, this service faced a huge revenue loss. When the Metro was regulated after the lockdown it had different rules and guidelines. First of all, people were not allowed to sit and gather at a place in a Metro. Alternative seats were being used by the passengers. A minimum number of members were allowed to travel in a Metro.
The Metro rail service used thermal screening of passengers to allow them to travel. They also took care of social safety norms along with sanitization facilities. They marked the respective places in the metro at which people were allowed to stand or sit. Usage of mask was mandatory. If anybody was measured with a high temperature than the specified limit, they were not allowed to enter in a Metro. Indian Railways was also suspended from March and they face a revenue loss.
COVID 19 EFFECT OF VARIOUS SECTORS
Every sector had a huge impact on COVID-19. So, let’s discuss the effect on these sectors.
AGRICULTURE AND FOOD PROCESSING SECTOR
It is one of that sector of India that had an adverse risk effect of the global pandemic. It is the third-largest producer of eggs in India and it is already facing huge losses every day. On the other hand, social media is flooded with rumors and this has caused enormous destruction in the products and pricing.
Funds need to flow in the market at a constant rate but COVID-19 is distracting the leads of funds. So, some rules are changed in the market.
It is a very active sector in this global pandemic. The demand for medicines is increased due to this virus. So, people are facing high pricing decision on medicines.
CULTURE AND TOURISM SECTOR
India has a great scope of culture and historical tourism. But, restricting the transfer of tourists from one country to the other the tourism sector is almost degraded. Visas are suspended and tourist attractions are shut down for such a long period. This sudden shutdown of tourism and such historical monuments has led to the shutdown of restaurants, agent operators, and hotels. Also, it is not certain that when the tourism industry would return to its higher profits.
The Indian government has suspended domestic and international flights that has put a huge effect on the aviation industry as well. The industry is facing a daily loss of 90 crores due to the cancellation of flights. Now, when the flights will return their operations they will either need a government package or charge additional tax from the passengers to get back on track. Although, many tourists were stuck in India away from their home countries. A different arrangement was made from them. They had to undergo a medical checkup before traveling. When they reach their respective nation, they were in quarantine for 14 days. After 14 days, they again had to undergo a COVID-19 test. If they pass the test, then only they got permission to go to their homes.
The authorities followed this rule in India as well. If a person had to travel to other states, they also have to be in quarantine for 14 days before reaching home.
All the shops and other services are not in operation. E-Commerce was one of that sector of India that was growing at a huge rate. To follow social distancing norms and avoid leaving homes for unnecessary purposes, E-Commerce has also stopped its operations. People with their websites and the E-Commerce industry are not able to deliver the goods to the consumers due to lockdown. Although people need e-commerce as they do not have permission to leave their homes which has led to the demand of the industry. But the lockdown has formed it mandatory for both the consumers and corporations to be in their respective homes.
Talking about the education sector all the schools and educational institutions are physically not in operation. Teachers are taking online classes for students. But, not everybody is capable of taking those online classes as it needs the use of electronic gadgets and a proper Internet connection as well. Students who are going to appear for their board exams are facing the postponement of the exams. Due to the pandemic although class 10 students of the CBSE board do not have to give their board exams because the board canceled them. On the other hand, class 12 students have to appear for the exams someday or the other. Many institutions have not completed the syllabus. So, online exams are the second option to mark students as per their knowledge.
The business of real estate and construction is almost ending now. People in the banking sector are struggling with funding due to the loss in the annual income. People are not in such demand of houses. Migrant workers are returning to their homes because they are not able to fulfill their daily needs.
Due to the destruction of railways, roadways, and airways, they are not able to return to their homes. So, they have to walk away to their hometowns that is as far as 1000 kilometers. So, COVID-19 has affected every sector of the nation and nobody knows when these sectors would return to their constant speed. Not only India, but the other nations as well are facing some problems or the other due to this global pandemic Due to such worsening effects of the pandemic on nations they are facing a decline in their economic value as well and are taking help from international funds.
