Teachers and administrators have written a letter to the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh regarding the barred students. More than 50 academics demand to withdraw the BBC documentary punishment given to students who did the screening on campus.

Further, the BBC documentary was based on Narendra Modi and Gujarat riots that were screened on the DU campus without permission. As a result, the University barred two students. Now, teachers are unhappy with it and said that such institutions are not for defending the government.

In the letter to VC, they wrote, “We need not be you, that education institute is supposed to be a space where students and teachers are free to share and get information. Moreover, they should be free to express themselves and decide for themselves.”

It added, “They are 18+ and can draw the difference between right and wrong. We, teachers and administrators are here to interfere in their thoughts or put censorship on sources of information. However, the information should not promote hatred and violence.”

Further, in the letter academics also stated that the documentary was never banned. Therefore, the punishment given to students is pointless as they didn’t violate any rule.

BBC Documentary Punishment: Barred Two PhD Students

Two PhD students: Lokesh Chugh and Ravinder Singh have been barred from all academic activities for one year and the other 6 students are asked to submit apologies for screening. These students were involved in screening on campus on 27 January 2023.

As per academics, documentary screening did any harm to someone’s sentiments or causes violence. It didn’t possess any threat or disturbance on the campus. The letter reads that the university must make the campus a safe place for students to be part of critical thinking. And, it’s not the job of a university to engage in matters of defending the government.
