SUNDAR PICHAI’S FAREWELL TO THE CLASS OF 2020: BE HOPEFUL AND IMPATIENT

Sundar Pichai- CEO of Google expects today’s youngsters to be open, optimistic, and impatient. He believes that they have the opportunity to change everything as the world continues to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Sunday educated the graduating students of the class of 2020 in a virtual ceremony orchestrated by Google on its video platform YouTube. The ceremony was named as Dear Class of 2020.

Sundar Pichai began the virtual ceremony by addressing the sorrow and asserted that this is definitely not the graduation ceremony you all have dreamed of. It should have been the time when you all were commemorating your knowledge and achievements. You all must be grieving about all the plans you made, what all aspects you lost, maybe the jobs that were supposed to welcome you or maybe you all were looking forward to. In dark moments like these, it can be hard to discover hope.

Bestowing hope and motivating the students by pertaining to the crisis that senior students faced in the yore, Sundar Pichai cited their instances. Pichai asked the class of 2020 to be hopeful and inspire from the class of 1920 who graduated at the end of the pandemic, the class of 1970 who graduated during the Vietnam war of 1970, the class of 2002 who graduated a few months before 9/11 terrorist attack. He stated if they could survive and prosper, so can you.

Sundar Pichai asked the class of 2020 to be hopeful, grow impatient, and be open. He said if you all do that the class of 2020 will be remembered in history. Not for what you suffered but for what you did, for the change you brought. He asserted that the batch of 2020 has the opportunity to bring a change and he has faith in all the students of the class of 2020.

The Indian who became the CEO of Google narrated his personal experience and the challenges he faced when he first went to the US. In the class of 2020, he said that he was brought up in India and does not have access to technological resources. He didn’t have proper access to a computer until he traveled to Stanford. The television at their home only had only one channel. He traveled via plane for the first time when he got admission to Stanford University and he came to the US for higher education.

He narrated his journey to the US when his father spent bought the plane ticket to the US for him from his entire year’s salary. He included that his father did that so that he can go to Stanford for higher studies. He traveled on an airplane for the first time with that plane ticket and during that time the important aspect for him was computing.

Sundar Pichai added that the thing that brought him so far other than fortune was an open mind and a fascination for technology.

The graduation ceremony for the class of 2020 that was streamed on Google’s YouTube channel was attended by Korean pop-up singers BTS, singers Lady Gaga and Beyonce, former US President Barack Obama along with his wife Michelle Obama, former Defence Secretary Robert Gates and activist Malala Yousafzai.
