Students and teachers of different universities are facing problems related to online classes.
Delhi University is currently conducting online open-book exams for final year students. Final year students of undergraduate and postgraduate courses are appearing for online exams due to COVID-19.
Many students and teachers of different universities of Delhi raised their voice-over conducting online classes, fee hike, and lack of infrastructural support. Those students and teachers who were against online exams opposed the move. Delhi University has started conducting online classes for third and fifth-semester students from August 10.
A professor at Delhi University, Abha Dev Habib said that students and teachers are left out while taking decisions regarding online classes. This decision of online exams was taken without thinking about students. How will Kashmir students and those stuck in floods appear for exams? They do have any electronic gadgets with them. She said that this decision of online exams was taken without concerning the Academic and Executive council.
Unni Maya is the student of Lady Shri Ram College of Delhi University. She said that varsity did not think of the mental health and well being of students and start holding online classes. If students will take online classes, they have to spend maximum time in front of a laptop and mobile screen that will affect their mental health. She said that the varsity should provide electronic gadgets to the students and disclose the data of every department that how many students per department availed online classes.
Other than Delhi University, many teachers and students of other universities raised similar issues. The president of the student’s union of Jawaharlal Nehru University Aishe Ghosh said that the administration did not concern about students in Kashmir that they do not have a proper internet connection and also not about the students stuck in floods and those who contracted COVID-19.
She said that UGC has also said that the current semester will finish by September 30. So, students are pressurized to register for the next semester. The administration is creating issues and there is no meaning of registration. MBA and Engineering students are charged lakhs of rupees despite the fact that they do not get lab facility or part-time faculty. She called this mechanism of administration as a daylight robbery. The department’s representatives are pressurized not to raise their voices.
She said to the varsity to ensure that students return to the campus and the administration should set up proper medical protocols and quarantine centers inside the campus. Students and teachers of Ambedkar University also raised their voices against online classes. They said that the administration and state government did not hear their appeals.
Ambedkar University’s Shubhojeet Dey said that they conducted a survey and observed that 48 percent of students have smartphones and 2 percent of students do not have electronic gadgets to attend online classes.
The rest 50 percent of students have laptops with them. But 62 percent of them do not have their personal and do not get to use it for more than four hours as their siblings also attend classes on the laptop and do their work.
He said that 73 percent of students do not have proper internet connectivity. 98 percent of girls have to contribute their time in household chores also. They have approached the Delhi government regarding these issues but nobody has gone through their matter yet. Many students boycott their orientation class that is conducted so that students get familiar with the course.
Referring to all the demands of students, Dey said that the administration should postpone the classes by a month and should provide laptops to the students from disadvantaged sections. They should also provide stable data packs to the students.
