The Modi government came up with a scholarship scheme for the scheduled castes category. It aims to benefit four crore students over five years. The Social Justice and Empowerment Minister, a senior BJP leader, Thawarchand Gehlot said that the post-matric scholarship will increase the beneficiaries from the existing 60 lakhs.

He added that the Central government’s share in the scholarship scheme is increased to 80 percent from earlier 60 percent. This recent government decision was announced on Tuesday. The scheme will lead to a total expenditure of over Rs 59,048 crore by 2025-26. Moreover, the scholarship will aid the students by giving monetary assistance.

In the last two years, the Centre incurred expenses of around 1,100 crores annually on the scholarship scheme. Thus, Gehlot said that the state’s share got increased. Half of the states and union territories didn’t get any contribution or assistance from the government.
He told the reporters that the states used to defer from paying the scholarship amount on time or the funds were used for other purposes. This increased the rate of dropouts among the SC students. He assured me that this will change.

Around 17 percent of students benefited from the scholarship scheme. This percentage rose to 23 percent in the current year. The government aims to take the percentage of post-matric beneficiaries to 27.
