The Modi government came up with a scholarship scheme for the scheduled castes category. It aims to benefit four crore students over five years. The Social Justice and Empowerment Minister, a senior BJP leader, Thawarchand Gehlot said that the post-matric scholarship will increase the beneficiaries from the existing 60 lakhs.
He added that the Central government’s share in the scholarship scheme is increased to 80 percent from earlier 60 percent. This recent government decision was announced on Tuesday. The scheme will lead to a total expenditure of over Rs 59,048 crore by 2025-26. Moreover, the scholarship will aid the students by giving monetary assistance.
In the last two years, the Centre incurred expenses of around 1,100 crores annually on the scholarship scheme. Thus, Gehlot said that the state’s share got increased. Half of the states and union territories didn’t get any contribution or assistance from the government.
He told the reporters that the states used to defer from paying the scholarship amount on time or the funds were used for other purposes. This increased the rate of dropouts among the SC students. He assured me that this will change.
Gehlot said that the Centre will contribute when the state has done so. Plus, the amount will be transferred to the beneficiary account directly.
The Dalit face of the ruling party, Gehlot termed it as a historic decision that will uplift the educational standards. Till now no state has opposed the announcement.
Around 17 percent of students benefited from the scholarship scheme. This percentage rose to 23 percent in the current year. The government aims to take the percentage of post-matric beneficiaries to 27.
Dushyant Kumar Gautam, BJP General Secretary said in a press conference that under the Congress-UPA-led government 50 lakh fake beneficiaries got scholarships. In the press conference he said that at the cost of Dalit students, scholarships were manipulated to other accounts.
He targeted the Congress-ruled Punjab on inadequate lists of scholarship beneficiaries. They lacked documents in this aspect.
He alleged that Bhimrao Ambedkar didn’t get enough recognition from the Congress government. However, the Modi government worked towards building memorials for the Dalit icon.
The union government allocated an investment of over Rs 59,000 crore.
Prime minister Modi regarded it as a huge step towards giving access to education which will benefit many youngsters of the scheduled castes category. He added that the main focus of the government is to provide quality education to the youth.
