Education institutions, mainly colleges in Karnataka will be reopening in a graded manner. Professor MR Doreswamy, a government adviser on educational reforms proposed this idea of phased reopening. Hence, higher educational institutes, i.e. colleges are supposed to reopen first as they are the senior-most section. However, no particular date has been finalized for the reopening.

Why college reopening is prioritized?

Mr. MR Doreswamy said that Karnataka is all set to reopen colleges and schools. However, they will be following a graded reopening in which colleges will be the first to open. He said that college students are well aware of the healthcare rules and how sanitization is the need of the hour. Also, they have better immunity as compared to small children. Hence, they are capable enough to sustain in this new normal. In this pandemic situation, these elder students will diligently follow the health guidelines. Thus, to let them be the first in this reopening phase is justified. However, various educationists questioned and disputed the statement of better immunity of elder students.

IS IT OBLIGATORY FOR SCHOOLS TO REOPEN FROM OCTOBER 15?

Doreswamy gave his suggestion of a phased college reopening to Deputy Chief Minister, Ashwath Narayan and the minister for primary and secondary education, Suresh Kumar. Mr. Doreswamy also proposed that academic activities for pre-university students can also be possibly reopened. Hence, as per the phased theory, further lower classes will follow behind. However, this phased reopening would be only applicable for grades above 6. Additionally, hostel facilities and interstate transport will stay dismissed. Thus, the Karnataka college reopening is only applicable for residential local students.

What is the new Odd-Even arrangement of college reopening?

The students from all the educational institutes will be classified into two batches in total. Alternate classes will be held, i.e a one-day gap for each batch. Hence, if one group attends the other would stay home and vice-versa. Thus, this will ensure social distance as half the strength would be present.

WILL DELHI SCHOOLS REOPEN FROM OCTOBER 15?

Ministry of Education has recently permitted schools and college reopening from October 15th as per the state’s wish. Also, an SOP for attending the classes is made mandatory. Reduced timings, social distancing, and more are proposed as the precautionary measures. Hence, the odd-even formula is one of the safest methods available to be utilized in the new normal.
