The QS Subject Rankings 2025 have placed the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-Delhi) as the top-performing Indian institution in Engineering and Technology. The institute has secured the 26th spot globally. This is a major jump from its 45th rank last year. It strengthens IIT-Delhi’s position as a leading global institution in technology and research.

QS Subject Rankings 2025: Global Analysis

The QS Subject Rankings 2025 analyzed over 21,000 academic programs. These were from more than 1,700 universities in 100 countries. Institutions were assessed on five key indicators. These include academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, international research network, and H-index.

The rankings provide insights into subject-wise excellence. They help students and researchers understand the best institutions worldwide. This year, several Indian universities made significant improvements in various fields.

Nine Indian Institutes in Top 50

Along with IIT-Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) also secured a top 50 position. It ranked 29th globally in Development Studies. However, this is a drop from its 20th rank last year.

Delhi-based institutions showed mixed performance in specific subjects. Some fields saw improvement, while others declined. JNU’s rank in Sociology fell from 91st in 2024 to 101-150 in 2025. Yet, it improved in the Arts and Humanities category. It moved up from 244th in 2024 to 177th in 2025.

Delhi University (DU) also performed well. It climbed from the 210th position in 2024 to 160th in 2025 in Arts and Humanities. Additionally, DU improved in Social Sciences and Management. It secured the 137th rank, compared to 303rd last year.

IIT-Delhi Ranks in Top 100 Across Multiple Subjects

IIT-Delhi excelled in several academic fields. It secured a place among the top 100 institutions globally in 12 subjects. These include:

  • Computer Science & Information Systems
  • Data Science & AI
  • Business & Management Studies
  • Electrical Engineering

This strong performance highlights IIT-Delhi’s research quality and academic excellence. The institution continues to attract global attention in technical education.

Steady Growth for DU and JNU

DU and JNU have improved their rankings over the years. Since 2023, both universities have been moving up in the Arts and Humanities category. However, JNU still struggles in the area of Natural Sciences. It ranked 501-550 in 2025.

In 2022, JNU was ranked 188th and DU was 227th. Both institutions faced a setback in 2023, falling to 256 and 271, respectively. But they have shown a steady recovery since then.

QS Subject Rankings 2025 and Indian Education

The QS Subject Rankings 2025 highlight India’s growing presence in global education. IITs, DU, and JNU have made significant strides. Their performance in various subjects reflects the quality of education and research in the country.

Despite improvements, some areas still need attention. Certain disciplines have seen a decline in rankings. Indian universities must focus on research, innovation, and global collaborations to strengthen their global standing.

The QS Subject Rankings 2025 provide valuable insights. They help students, educators, and policymakers make informed decisions. IIT-Delhi’s achievement in Engineering and Technology is a major milestone. It showcases India’s potential to lead in global education and research.
