On Friday, the Supreme court was informed by the Central government that all those candidates who have exhausted all attempts at the UPSC Civil Services Examination will not be given another extra chance.
The exam was last conducted in October 2020. Any candidate who appears for the UPSC Civil Services Examination has a limited number of attempts. UPSC limits the number of attempts per candidate. Currently, for general category aspirants the maximum number of attempts is 6 with an upper age limit of 32 years whereas, for an OBC and SC/ST candidate, the maximum number of attempts ranges up to 9 attempts till 35 years of age and 9 attempts till 37 years of age respectively.
On Thursday, the top court was informed by S V Raju, the additional Solicitor-General by a late-eve call that no extra attempt will be given to any of those candidates who appeared for their last attempt in October 2020 and have exhausted their all attempts.
The bench of Justice Krishna Murari, BR Gavai, and AM Khanwilkar has asked the Centre about its stand taken on affidavit, and then the court was adjourned for 25 January 2020.
It was contended that a lot of candidates failed to appear for the UPSC CSE Prelims 2020 examination owing to the various ongoing pandemic related reasons and hence they sought an extra attempt for the UPSC CSE 2021.
Many candidates who were going to appear in the exam as their last attempt this time due to the age bar, sought relief in the form of an extra attempt through this plea for the UPSC CSE (Civil Services Prelims) 2021. Additionally, many candidates considered the pandemic to be a disruption in their preparations.
The Supreme court was earlier told by the central government that such a proposal for giving an extra chance to the Civil Services aspirants was under consideration by UPSC and the government.
