The National Medical Commission (NMC) has adopted a new strategy to clamp down on fees for private medical colleges. Under this, there is a readiness to regulate 50 percent of seats in these colleges. Its draft has been released and it will be implemented from the next session.

There are 4150 seats in 31 private-sector colleges in the state, while there are about 3000 seats in 22 government colleges. There is a fee determination committee at the state level to monitor the fees of private colleges. This committee determines the fees every year based on the facilities of the respective private college. The NMC has released a new draft on 25 May for the same.

In this, advice has been sought on fixing fees for private colleges and improving medical education. Also, 50 percent of seats in private colleges have been proposed to be regulated. Under this, the committee will decide the fees by assessing the facilities according to the fees so far kept on 50 percent seats, while the fees can be reduced on 50 percent seats. The draft states that no college will work for a profit.

However, the draft has caused a stir among private college operators. The operators are ready to go to court once again on this matter. He argues that the State Fee Determination Committee has been formed only after the directions of the Supreme Court. In such a situation there is no justification for the proposal like regulating the fees.

The major reason for the stir after the NMC draft is passed in private college operators is that after admission there will be a complete ban on several expenses during studies. There will be no additional charges paid by students. However, the capitation fee has been banned since 2016. Even after this, charges continue to be levied for some kind of fee.
