During a virtual orientation event, IIT-Mandi welcomed the new BTech batch of 2020. From different parts of the country, around 330 students have joined the institute. Across BTech courses, a total number of 330 students were admitted to IIT-Mandi this year. There has been a slight increase in the number of females this year. Against the 53 girls and 209 boys that had joined last year, 68 boys and 262 girls have joined this year.
By admitting 20.61 percent of female students to the BTech program, IIT-Mandi claims to have successfully achieved the target of female enrolment in undergraduate courses. In the first year, the institute provides a merit scholarship including a full-tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000 irrespective of the parent’s income and category. For four years, this merit scholarship will continue subject to the academic performance of minimum SPGA criteria of 7.0 for the previous two semesters and no disciplinary action.
The freshers were welcomed to the five Week Induction Program (5WIP). This induction program will be organized in phases this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. On November 23, the first phase of the induction program started. The 5WIP, which faculty-mentored induction program, aims at providing training to the new students in order to help them in their transition from school to college, to improve their proficiency and respective skills. Introductory sessions on English and Communication, exploring soft skills, engineering, and computer proficiency will be included in the first phase of this program.
Dean (Academics) Dr. Pradeep Parameswaran, IIT-Mandi said that an important aspect of the curriculum is the integration of innovation and design into the learning process. The integration of innovation and design can be accepted through a model of learning by doing, which is built into the curriculum.
BTech Honors, which is a minor program, is also allowed by the institute to be pursued by the students. The minor program can be in a related field including intelligent systems, management, German language, and applied physics outside the major course discipline. The credit scores can be increased by the students by opting for BTech Honors as well.
