As per the press release, the decision to restrict the bitrates and the streaming of High Definition, as well as Ultra HD, shall remain suspended.
This step was taken in a meeting organized by Uday Shankar, chairman, Star & Disney India, which was also joined by top industrialist, Punit Goenka(Zee Entertainment Enterprises),NP Singh(Sony Pictures Network),Sudhanshu Vats(Viacom),Sanjay Gupta(Google India), Gaurav Gandhi(Amazon Prime Video), Ajit Mohan(Facebook),Nikhil Gandhi(Tik Tok),Ambika Khurrana(Netflix), Varun Narang(Hotstar), Karan Bedi(MX Player).
In wake of the 21- days lockdown in India imposed by the Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, the Indian OTT platforms show concerns and took action to reduce the streaming from High Definition to Standard Definition by lowering down the bitrates to 480 pixels.
Due to complete lockdown in India, there shall be a huge internet consumption that may result in boosting the strain on Internet networks.
However, the reduction in the qualities of the videos on mentions platforms shall only include if the operators use cellular networks. The broadband users can enjoy the High Definition or the Ultra HD respective of their network plans.
Youtube, owned by Google has also stated, that it shall be reducing its video quality by standard definition across the globe.
The tri-association of Reliance Jio, Vodafone India, And Bharti Airtel, The Cellular Operation Association of India(COAI) had also decided to reduce video quality on 12 streaming platforms. For the same, they separately wrote to DoT.
“Last week, we announced that we are temporarily defaulting all videos on Youtube to standard definition in the European Union. Given the global nature of the crises, we shall expand the change globally starting today”, a Google Spokesperson said in a statement .
He also added, “We continue to work closely with the government and network operators around the world to do our part to minimize the stress on the system during the unprecedented situation”
