The Union Ministry of Education has planned to set up a Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (MERU) on the lines of IIT, IIM, for which the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) memo has been prepared. The Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) has prepared a note incorporating the provisions of the Multi-Disciplinary Education and Research University (MERU), a ministry official told Bhasha.

 

THE NEW NATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY HAS A PROVISION

He said that provisions of the new National Education Policy have been included in this regard. It has been mentioned in the proposal of the new National Education Policy. These universities proposed for higher education will be called Multi-disciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERU).

In the future, the goal is to make them level Ivy League of America universities. Multi-disciplinary research and education will be emphasized in these institutions.

These universities will have departments such as language, literature, music, philosophy, ideology, art, dance, theater, education, mathematics, statistics, pure and applied sciences, sociology, economics, and sports.

The New Education Policy Emphasizes The Overall Multi-disciplinary Education System

Significantly, the new education policy emphasizes on the overall multi-disciplinary education system. It envisages establishing the best multi-disciplinary education model as the IITs, IIMs as Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERUs) in line with global standards to encourage multi-disciplinary education.

The emphasis is on transforming higher education institutions into resource-rich, dynamic multi-disciplinary institutions through providing higher education, research, and community participation. It envisages the conversion of higher educational institutions into multi-disciplinary education centers in the coming years.

GROSS ENROLLMENT AT THE LEVEL OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Under the new National Education Policy, the Ministry of Education has set a target to increase the gross enrollment rate to 50 percent at the level of higher education by the year 2035 to strengthen the National Higher Education Campaign scheme.

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, in a review meeting of the National Higher Education Campaign recently, asked the officials to strengthen the RUSA scheme and formulate a plan to educate an additional 3.5 crore students at the level of higher education.

It is worth noting that at present the Gross Enrollment Rate (GER) at the level of higher education is around 26 percent. The Ministry has also emphasized linking education in Degree College with the “One District, One Product” scheme.
