In the process to make Delhi University’s campus disabled friendly,Miranda House has moved a step forward and installed digital talking signages in the college that would help visually challenged students figure out their way across the college. The college has put up 100QR code acrylic sheets at various important junctions like canteen, classroom, hostel rooms places where students often visit.

Various other steps have been taken such as there is a special bus for physically challenged, screen readers in computers at registration desk etc but there are certain things where the varsity lacks basic infrastructure to ease the things for students. This new initiative seems to be a right model towards visually challenged students if other colleges also install such signages then blind students can easily roam around the campus without anyone’s help.

How does it work? Students have to first download the customized app on their smartphones. The college has installed a 6-inch square scan code which would be one inch way from the wall. The student holding the phone comes within three feet close to the code,a verbal message would come out that would give them the details regarding the location. For instance If a student wish to enter the canteen, they have to come close to the digital signage installed outside. The code will inform them that in three steps, there is a gate and directs the students on how many steps are required to enter the location.”
