A second-year LSR student of the Mathematics department and a resident of the LSR hostel was forced to commit suicide on November 3, 2020. The reasons that forced her to take such a drastic step are both outrageous and shocking.
She was the state topper in class 12th examinations. Coming from a working-class family, her family was forced to mortgage their house in order to ensure that she can pursue her higher studies at Delhi University. She was elected for the INSPIRE scholarship given by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, because of her excellent result in the 12th examination. The scholarship that had provided her some relief has been delayed since March which resulted in extreme financial pressure.
The parents of the LSR student informed SFI Ranga Reddy District President Comrade Prashant while meeting with them, that education was highly valued by her. Education is perceived as a path for a more financially stable and respectable future for the family for many students coming from working-class and economically low-income family backgrounds.
No college, governmental, or university authority has tried to reach out to students like her who are facing a delay in the disbursement of the scholarship. In the survey that was conducted by the LSR Students’ Union, the exclusion that is faced by the students coming from socially and economically weak backgrounds.
SFI LSR holds the governmental institutes responsible for the suicide of the LSR student, they are calling it an “institutional murder.” They have held the central government, the college, and the university for the apathy that was shown towards the deceased student. Because of the loss of the income of many students, there are many students who are facing such unprecedented levels of stress.
