The Kerala Institutional Ranking Framework (KIRF) modeled on the National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF) has come into existence. Higher education minister R Bindu set up this framework. The first of its type in the nation, at a function held on Kerala University’s Kariavattom campus.

The state higher education council set up a state-specific institution ranking framework. It aims at fetching a more democratic and secular direction while ranking the higher education institutions. The KIRF would arise as the mark of greatness for higher education institutions in the state.

The ranking framework was launched in the 100-day program of the state government. Bindu said the order framework would give a priceless impetus to the actions of the state government. Efforts to restore Kerala society into a knowledge society.

The KIRF ranking, said the minister, would assist the higher education institutions in the state. This further enhances their rank in the national and international ranking framework at the institutional level.

At the same time, based on the order, students who seek new generation and cutting-edge courses would be able to make informed decisions while choosing a college and program.

The KIRF, said the higher education minister, obeys the primary values and elements observed by NIRF. It is primarily based on five elements Teaching, Learning, and Resources (TLR), Knowledge Dissemination and Research Excellence (KDRE), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), Scientific Temper, and Secular Outlook (STSO). Scientific Temper and Secular Outlook (STSO) are the additional bars in KIRF.

Institutions are broadly categorized into 12 sections, including universities, colleges, engineering, management, architecture, medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, law, as well as teacher education. The ranking carried out by the higher education council depends on the data provided by the respective institutions.
