The teacher’s body, Jawaharlal Nehru Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) demanded JNU to withdraw from CUET for all courses it is offering. It added that no admission has taken place for the 2022-23 session till now. Moreover, teachers said that teaching hours are getting in vain as CUET delays.
According to JNUTA, “The reason for the waste of educational resources is the so-called policy of ‘One nation, One exam’. The exam of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) was conducted too late, which is affecting the academic calendar of various central universities. Therefore, none of the participating universities can take admission in any UG or PG courses/programs.”

CUET doesn’t benefit marginalised backgrounds, said, teachers’ body
The JNUTA said that the CUET exam is not benefiting the students from marginalised backgrounds plus it seems to be a disadvantage for them. Further, Suchitra Sen, JNUTA secretary said “This test is computer-based so it needs specific skills to give. But some marginalised background students don’t have enough access to operate a system. Moreover, some don’t even own smartphones, then how will they use the computer? So, CUET can be advantageous only if the country has 100% computer literacy.’ That’s why the teachers’ body is urging JNU to withdraw from CUET.

As per 2019-2020 JNU data, 50% of students come from rural backgrounds. The main objective of JNU is to provide access to all students around the country regardless of their background. For this, it has a deprivation point system for the advantage of people coming from regional and economically weaker sections.
What is CUET?
Common University Entrance Test or CUET is based on a policy of ‘One nation, one exam’ conducted by the agency, NTA. Moreover, it is an entirely computer-based test for students who seek admission in undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD programs. Further, a total of 45 central universities are seen to participate in it, including our prestigious universities like Delhi University and JNU. Before this year, only seven central universities in India were taking CUET.

Recently, the CUET for UG admission took place in six phases. In the month of July, the NTA conducted this exam with a pattern of objective- type of questions. There is also much flexibility given to students, they can give tests in 13 languages. Includes Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi, English, Urdu and Hindi.
