JNU to establish Centre for Tamil Studies, to preserve Linguistic Heritage

On Monday, Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Santishree D. Pandit shared that the varsity is planning to set up a Centre for Tamil Studies. Moreover, for this Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had sanctioned an aid of Rs 10 Crore.

Besides Tamil Nadu state, Assam, Odisha, Karnataka, and Maharashtra have shown the same interest. Therefore, the varsity also wants to preserve India and its linguistic and cultural heritage. And, this can be done by setting up the School of Indian Languages.

During the Tamil Heritage Week and Indian Languages Week at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the announcement is made. Also, the event was about preserving the linguistic heritage of India.

Further, the university VC stated that JNU is always well-known for praising India’s cultural heritage or diversity. “Northern students will be able to explore other languages of the south, east, and west. As a result, it will create nationwide integration by sensitizing students.”

JNU Centre for Tamil Studies: Other states promise to contribute

After Tamil Nadu’s contribution, Karnataka and Odisha have promised contribute to the School of Indian Languages. The Vice-Chancellor said, “These contributions will bring a sum of Rs 50 Crore to the university initiative. Currently, we are running certificate programs/courses. However, we are looking forward to beginning master’s programs in culture, history, literature, and such.

Furthermore, to raise funds the university has planned two ways. One is to introduce short-term certificate courses for new language learners. Another one is through private philanthropists and university alumni. As they will set up a link on its website and it will directly add to the university account or funds.
