On Wednesday, the JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) told the Delhi High Court that the mandate of reserving 5% seats for the students who are disabled was never violated. The University also told the Court that they were providing all the courses for the academic year 2020-21.
A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan had issued a notice to the University on June 11. This notice was issued on a plea which claimed that JNU was keeping a smaller number of seats than the recommended 5% for the disabled students in the new academic year. The submission was made in an affidavit before the bench.
Javed Abidi Foundation had filed the petition. The Foundation works for the disabled persons and their welfare. The Foundation, in its petition, has sought a direction by the HC to JNU to bring changes to its prospectus and the admission policy.
JNU had filed its affidavit through the standing counsel of the Central government, Monika Arora. In its affidavit, the University has denied the allegations against it. It has made clear that there is a reservation for 5% of seats for persons with disabilities (PWD).
JNU said that in almost all courses of its various centers and schools, it had been reserving seats for the PWD category.
According to JNU, the rules and regulations of the University are in accordance with the Disability Act.
It has been contended by JNU that the allegations made against the university in the petition are misconceived, wrong, and based on a misinterpretation of the law.
The matter has been listed by the bench of further hearing on July 8.
