The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration has written to the JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) requesting them to vacate their office space for the Women’s Club within 3 days.
The JNUTA stated the action was vindictive as in a press statement on May 5, they had requested the concession of the VC for sitting on suggestions from 2 schools on how to survive the COVID crisis in the university.
M K Pachauri, Joint Registrar (Estate) wrote to the JNUTA saying this is to inform you that the Executive Council, in its 294th meeting conducted on 26.03.2021 vide Resolution No. 5.20, resolved to allot 1st and 2nd room with attached washroom on the left-hand side at the entry point of JNU Faculty Activity Centre (Old Estate Building), to JNU Women’s club for office, cultural, and other activities.
Therefore, it demanded to hand over the said rooms to the Caretaker of the Estate Branch within three days of the acknowledgment of this letter. This topic with the permission of the competent authority.
Moushumi Basu, JNU Teachers’ Association secretary mentioned the 2 rooms were their office expanse, besides which there was 1 hall to conduct conferences. When inquired if they would be presenting over the keys.
The JNU Teachers’ Association said in a statement that it is intriguing to note that the 294th EC meeting where such a conclusion was taken was conducted on 26 March 2021. On 5th May JNUTA published a press statement stressing the resignation of the Caretaker Vice-Chancellor and shortly on 7 May exactly 2 days after the letter was mailed to JNUTA.
They said it goes to demonstrate not just the vindictiveness that counsels the administration’s behavior. But also as to how far eliminated they are from dealing with the Coronavirus crisis at the ground level.
