“IT WON’T BE A SURPRISE, IF I COMMIT SUICIDE”, DELHI UNIVERSITY STUDENT STRESSED OVER OBE

A final year student of Delhi University wrote on its class’s WhatsApp group that it would not be a big deal if he commits suicide in upcoming days.

This message is an outcome of the newly devised Open Book Examination (OBE) scheme, designed for the conduction of final year examinations for the session 2019-20.

Students are really tensed over this method of final exam execution.  The above message was shared by a student at Satyawati College, Delhi University. One more student is said to have a similar thought.

A teacher in that particular group, have put this news forward. Also,  the group has many chats of students, stressing and panicking about OBE.

According to the sources, the students have unitedly opposed OBE. And they also wrote a letter to the Delhi University Dean, Ministry of Human Resource and Development, and even the president of India.

In the application, they clearly stated the reasons behind their strong resistance. The online classes for this semester were not done properly and due to this we are not prepared for OBE, students asserted.

Also, after receiving such disturbing views and thoughts over the concerned matter, the teacher immediately told the other related lecturers and called the students. They communicated with them and discussed the matter. The teachers consoled and advised them not to take unfavorable steps.

The teachers also had a talk with the parents regarding OBE and their children.

UGC directs to set up a helpline number for students’ mental health

A student of the same Whatsapp group told, as soon as the other student stated about committing suicide, he got in touch with him and also shared the DU  helpline number for mental health.

The student shared the “suicidal thoughts” because right now he is in a village without any books or study material available to him.  In addition to this, there is a lack of proper Internet connectivity in the village. Being depressed, he shared it in his class’s Whatsapp group.

 

A student from the same group wrote similar concerns. She is, at present residing in Faridabad with his husband and in-laws.   Due to the lockdown imposed, her husband lost the job. And due to excessive household chores,  she didn’t get time to study. The professors and her batchmates communicated and forbade her to think negatively.

Around eight pupils and teachers were briefly detained on Monday, 22 June, after they arranged a protest outside Delhi University’s Faculty of Arts over the varsity’s judgment to hold Online Book Examinations (OBEs) for final-year students, police told.

The students are requesting a different procedure of evaluation for all students as students from impoverished backgrounds will not be able to come up for the online exams.

Petitioning the revocation of “discriminatory” online exams, students from Kirorimal College, Zakir Hussain College, Campus Law Centre, Indraprastha College, and Miranda House have written open letters to the Vice-Chancellor.
