INDIAN INSTITUTIONS GETS APPROVAL TO SETUP FOREIGN CAMPUSES

Indian Institutions are getting green flags from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the ministry of education to set up overseas foreign campuses. Hence, the UGC has recently approved the Institutions of Eminence (IoEs). Therefore, they got a no-objection certificate from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Which Indian Institutions are on the list of Institution of Eminence (IoE)?

A lot of IITs and other public institutions are on the list of IoE. However, these public universities and institutions are funded by the government and function in a “not for profit” mode. Hence, the burden of foreign campus building will rely on the government and could be tiresome.

Benefits of establishing international campuses by Indian Institutions:

V Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT Delhi says that setting up such foreign institutions can serve as a welcome move with multiple advantages. Hence, it can serve these Indian institutions to set foot at an international level and improve the perception. Therefore, this will assist them in securing an international ranking. However, he also adds that they can not rely on government funds and need to devise a financial model.

Challenges involved in establishing international campuses by Indian Institutions:

Mr. Rao highlighted the financing model as the biggest hurdle. PC Joshi, Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University says that these Indian institutions can adopt the public-private partnership (PPP) model for raising funds. The other options for funding include endowment funds and alumni funds. He suggested that foreign campuses can be established in countries like Singapore and Mauritius. Hence, they are a host to a huge number of Indian population and also focus enormously on Research and Development (R&D).

IS THE MINIMUM PASSING MARKS OF CBSE 10TH AND 12TH STUDENTS REDUCED?

Setting up campuses, extra curriculum, and admission procedure needs a lot of effort. However, brand dilution is equally tough. For example, BTech is offered as an undergraduate course in Indian Institutions. However, the same nomenclature does not apply to all countries. Hence, a lot of planning is required.
