India is planning to set up its first overseas IIT campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. For this, the Indian Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India, IIT Madras and Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) Zanzibar signed the MoU on 6 July 2023.
As per the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the IIT Madras campus will be set up in Zanzibar. Moreover, this is one of the three campuses of IIT overseas. Other Indian Institute of Technology will be set up in Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur.
Globalization of Higher Education
Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister for Education said that such an agreement between India and Zanzibar will help in the globalisation of higher education. Also, it is the will of PM Narendra Modi’s commitment to build connections with Africa.

Further, he said, “National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) is the way for knowledge to become a critical element of bilateral relations and for improving global good.”
Why did the Government establish the IIT Campus at Zanzibar?
This agreement between Madras and Zanzibar will bring IIT educational experience to African locations. Further, IIT Madras will take the lead for the academic program, curriculum, student selection and other educational aspects. Whereas the capital and running costs will be covered by Zanzibar, Tanzania government.
