IIT MADRAS RESEARCHERS DEVELOP ULTRASOUND BASED TEMPERATURE TRACKING GADGET

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Madras) have formulated an ultrasound based temperature tracking gadget to monitor the treatment of patients.

The noninvasive gadget has been developed by Divya Baskaran (Ph.D. scholar) department of engineering design; Aliarshad Kothawala (Ph.D. scholar) department of applied mechanics; and Kavita Arunachalam (associate professor) department of engineering design.

How does an ultrasound-based temperature tracking machine works?

The development involves attaining diagnostic ultrasound signals from the region of interest inside the human body. Heat is involved non-invasively from an outside source either through a high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) or microwave applicator.

The ultrasound-based real-time feedback can be incorporated with the low-intensity ultrasound devices used for heat therapy that is mostly used in physiotherapy centers.

Arun K. Thittai from the department of applied mechanics IIT Madras while highlighting the advantages of this technology to already prevailing technologies said that having feedback with multi-parametric images enables accurate real-time surveillance for a wide range of thermal therapies. These procedures can be integrated as software in existing scanners by the producers and thus not compel any extra electronics hardware.

Publication and Awards

The IIT Madras research team has been awarded the SITARE – the Gandhian Young Technology Innovation (GYTI) Award Appreciation 2020′ for this innovation.

IIT MADRAS OFFERS ONLINE COURSE ON ADVANCED PROGRAMMING

A comprehensive in-house setup for a nonsurgical procedure or HIFU ablation has been established by the IIT researchers of the applied mechanics’ department in this institution.

The results from this innovation have also been published and presented in various international IEEE (Institute of Electrical Engineering Engineers) society conferences over the past year. The researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Madras are being praised all around for their innovative invention.
