IIT Madras will offer an elective course for the full semester. Inspiring from the healing nature, it is providing a course on biomimicry that will observe nature as a source of inspiration and try to deal with complicated situations.
It is the first institution in India that will offer a full-fledged course on biomimicry. Not only in the field of engineering, technology, and design, biomimicry is equally efficient in fields like management, human resources, administration, social science, and arts. It is beneficial to enhance sustainability rather than just being innovative from nature with the help of biomimicry. It is beneficial for school children if they come to know about biomimicry.

BIOMIMICRY IS THE COMBINATION OF BOTH BIOLOGIST AND ENGINEER
Biomimicry does not wholly resolve to a biologist or to an engineer. It is a combination of both. One has to be curious enough to learn biomimicry, curious to know how a lotus leaf remains clean. It is about observing the microscopic bumps on the surface of the leaf that repels water. Due to the bumps, water from the surface of the leaf rolls down with dirt particles. Taking this as an example, one can implement practically. A similar structure can be used in school uniforms so that they do not get dirty.

There are many other similar organisms that build strategies to over many years of adaptation to the planet. These organisms and their strategies can be observed to build new techniques and design new solutions in the world. Biomimicry is not about learning but observing things. The guiding principles make conditions to deal with it.
SOME EXAMPLES OF BIOMIMICRY
There are many examples of engineering that is inspired by biomimicry. The bullet train running in Tokyo, ‘Shinkansen’ is inspired by a kingfisher. The termite mound inspired the Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe. There are many students who are eager to explore new opportunities in research, entrepreneurship, new products, processes, and systems.
STUDENTS WILL FIND NEW AND MODERN SOLUTIONS
IIT Madras created that group of students eager to learn from biomimicry. The institute is planning to challenge students so that they can think about some ideas related to sustainability. This will help students to innovate new and modern solutions using biomimicry.
TEACHERS OF BIOMIMICRY IN IIT MADRAS
As per the recent updates, MS Sivakumar, Dean of Students of IIT Madras, the Chief Innovative Officer, Shiva Subramaniam, Satyanarayanan Seshadri, and Srinivasa Chakravarthy will be teaching biomimicry to the students at IIT Madras. Students have shown a great response to this decision.
