A research team of IIT, Kharagpur, has acquired an advanced version of COVIRAP (diagnostic technology for infectious diseases incorporating Covid-19) using a gradual stepwise isothermal nucleic acid testing technology for rapid diagnosis of pathogenic infections, including SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19), in individuals.
The Covid-19 diagnostic test can be conducted directly from human swab samples in the portable device developed by the team without expecting any distinct facility for RNA extraction.
The results can be made ready within 45 minutes. The kit has been supplemented with a free smartphone app to facilitate explicit result interpretation and automated dissemination to the sufferers.
Kharagpur IIT has initiated the procedure of deploying this product for on-campus use to detect possible Covid infection.
For the test, the nasal as well as oral swab samples are diluted in a solution and tested in the portable device by combining with reagents that are supplied in a pre-mixed form. The test runs automatically in the device without manual intervention.
Kharagpur IIT has already successfully commercialised the original COVIRAP. The product has been licensed for commercialisation to the Rapid Diagnostic Group of Companies, India and Bramerton Holdings LLC, USA.
